NSW LEP: What is a 'Depot'?

Depot -

means a building or place used for the storage (but not sale or hire) of plant, machinery or other goods (that support the operations of an existing undertaking) when not required for use, but does not include a farm building.

A Depot serves as a vital logistical hub for organisations requiring secure storage of equipment, machinery or goods that are not currently in use.

For example, a construction company might use a depot to store heavy machinery like excavators, cranes or scaffolding components when they are not deployed on-site.

Similarly, utility companies often rely on depots to house essential tools, vehicles and spare parts needed for maintenance and emergency repairs, ensuring readiness when operations demand them.

Depots are typically located in industrial zones or on the outskirts of urban areas to allow easy access to major transport routes while minimising impact on residential communities.

These facilities play a key role in supporting the operational efficiency of businesses by providing organised storage and safeguarding valuable assets.

By centralising these resources, depots help streamline operations, reduce costs and improve response times, making them an integral part of industries ranging from construction and transport to logistics and utilities.
