NSW LEP: What is a 'Food and Drink Premises'?

Food and Drink Premises -

means premises that are used for the preparation and retail sale of food or drink (or both) for immediate consumption on or off the premises, and includes any of the following—

(a)  a restaurant or cafe,

(b)  take away food and drink premises,

(c)  a pub,

(d)  a small bar.

Food and Drink Premises are central to the social and economic fabric of any community, offering diverse dining and entertainment experiences that cater to a wide range of preferences and needs.

For instance, a vibrant cafe in a suburban area may serve as a hub for locals to gather over coffee, while a takeaway food and drink premises located near busy transport hubs provides convenient meal options for commuters.

These establishments not only contribute to the convenience of daily life but also enhance the character and vibrancy of their surroundings.

In urban centres, pubs and small bars often act as cultural and social landmarks, drawing people together for leisure, live music or community events.

They also play a significant role in supporting local economies by creating jobs and attracting tourism.

From a planning perspective, these premises must balance their operational needs with considerations such as noise management, traffic flow and compliance with liquor licensing regulations.

When thoughtfully integrated into the local context, food and drink premises enrich community life and foster thriving, dynamic neighbourhoods.
