NSW LEP: What is 'Backpacker Accommodation'?

Backpackers' Accommodation -

means a building or place that—

(a)  provides temporary or short-term accommodation on a commercial basis, and

(b)  has shared facilities, such as a communal bathroom, kitchen or laundry, and

(c)  provides accommodation on a bed or dormitory-style basis (rather than by room).

1. Temporary or Short-term Accommodation

  • Backpackers' accommodations are primarily aimed at providing lodging for travelers who need a place to stay for a short duration. This could range from a single night to several weeks.

  • The focus is on flexibility and convenience, making it an ideal choice for individuals who are constantly on the move and do not require long-term housing commitments.

2. Commercial Basis

  • These accommodations operate as businesses, charging guests for their stay. The pricing is often more affordable compared to traditional hotels, making it accessible for budget-conscious travelers.

  • They may offer various pricing options, such as nightly rates or discounted weekly rates, to cater to different budget levels and lengths of stay.

3. Shared Facilities

  • Backpackers' accommodations typically feature communal facilities that guests share. These often include bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry areas.

  • The shared facilities foster a sense of community among travelers and provide opportunities for social interaction and cultural exchange.

  • Guests are usually expected to maintain cleanliness and respect the shared spaces to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.

4. Bed or Dormitory-style Accommodation

  • Instead of offering private rooms, backpackers' accommodations often provide beds in shared dormitories. This setup maximizes space and allows for more affordable pricing.

  • Dormitories can vary in size, accommodating anywhere from a few to several dozen guests, depending on the establishment.

  • Some accommodations may also offer private rooms at a higher rate for those seeking more privacy, while still providing access to shared facilities.

5. Community and Social Environment

  • A key aspect of backpackers' accommodations is the vibrant social atmosphere they create. Travelers from diverse backgrounds come together, often sharing stories, travel tips, and experiences.

  • Many of these accommodations organize social events, tours, or group activities to enhance the communal experience and help guests connect with one another.
