NSW LEP: What is a 'Business Premises'?

Business Premises -

means a building or place at or on which—

(a)  an occupation, profession or trade (other than an industry) is carried on for the provision of services directly to members of the public on a regular basis, or

(b)  a service is provided directly to members of the public on a regular basis,

and includes funeral homes, goods repair and reuse premises and, without limitation, premises such as banks, post offices, hairdressers, dry cleaners, travel agencies, betting agencies and the like, but does not include an entertainment facility, home business, home occupation, home occupation (sex services), medical centre, restricted premises, sex services premises or veterinary hospital.

Business Premises encompass a wide range of service-oriented spaces that cater directly to the public, forming an integral part of the local economy and community infrastructure.

Examples include banks providing financial services, hairdressers or post offices.

These premises are often located in highly accessible areas such as town centres, shopping precincts or along major thoroughfares to maximise visibility and convenience for the public.

The flexibility of this category allows it to accommodate diverse business types, from dry cleaners and travel agencies to more niche services like goods repair and reuse premises.

Each type of business contributes to the vibrancy of its location by fulfilling specific community needs. For instance, a travel agency in a suburban shopping strip might provide tailored holiday planning services, while a repair shop in a light commercial area might focus on sustainability by promoting the reuse of goods.

By aligning with zoning regulations and the surrounding urban fabric, business premises not only support economic growth but also enhance the accessibility and diversity of services available to local communities.
